Sdaughter to a medical doctor and a lawyer, vanessa had little to nothing when it came to her parents’s care.studying in the best school, doing as many extra activities as possibles, she learned if she ever wanted crumbs of their love, she had to be the best.they wouldn’t show up to any ballet presentations, unless she was a finalist at a competition. this was repeated to everything: archery, athletism, football, fencing, equestrianism … absolutely anything.and she was successful.after her sister was born, things got harder. there was an obvious preference aming the two, but she would keep doing what she did best: everything.becoming a rather competitive person, anything her parents signed her up to, she would come back with a first place trophy and a golden medal on her chest.her sister got into med school and vanessa, following her mother’s footsteps, went to law school ; ready to be the best there as well.but something felt wrong.she hated everything about university and law.still, she graduated. her parents couldn’t be more proud and she couldn’t feel more empty.another year passed, working in her mother’s law firm and visiting her grandparents often, since when she was younger, her parents didn’t take her to visit them and she was usually busy to even do so.since she was little, her grandparents had been the complete opposite of her parents ; they were always there, if she lost or won, it never mattered to them.her grandfather, a navy pilot graduated from top gun. he always told her stories about deployments, missions … it had always enchanted the girl, the idea of fly as high as she could.but following his footsteps was out of questions. her parents never approved of and shut down any attempts at a conversation. for them, she had two options only: a medical doctor and a lawyer.in the end of that year, her grandfather passed away. at the funeral, her grandmother reached over and gave her his navy insignia, the wings.it was at that moment she made the decision.leaving her mother’s law firm, enlisting on the very next day. it didn’t take long until she was called to top gun and, as usual, graduated first of her class.but her parents didn’t show up this time, neither her sister. only her grandmother was there.since them, vanessa didn’t bother contacting her family again.at last, she made choice. she was building her own path and she was happy.
